Christmas Devotional Series: A Savior is Born

Spread the love

“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” -Luke 2:11-12

Savior. Messiah. Lord.

All some hefty words for a baby, but He was not just any baby. We’re talking about a baby who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born to a virgin. A baby who would sit at the right hand of God and rule over His kingdom forever.

When an angel declares these words to a bunch of shepherds in their field, he declares this is in fact . . . a fact. That on that day, in the town of David, a Savior was born. The “town of David” is referring to Bethlehem as this is where David’s father, Jesse, lived. This also would confirm what we knew to be true of the Messiah, as Micah 5:2 reads, “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

A Savior is born. We’re all sinners and we’re all in need of a Savior. Not one of us is perfect and not one of us is without sin (except for Jesus who was fully man and fully God). He would come to save us from our sinners, to save us from ourselves, all so He could spend eternity with us.

The Messiah is born. “‘Messiah’ comes from the Hebrew word mashiach, meaning ‘anointed one’ or ‘chosen one.’”* He was the chosen one who would come to save us. Isaiah 53:12 is another prophecy pointing to this and it reads, “Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”

And finally, Christ the Lord is born. The English Standard Version (ESV) of this verse reads, “who is Christ the Lord” and the word “Christ” comes from the word Christos which is the Greek word for “anointed one” or “chosen one.”** Jesus is Lord over all and the “Mighty God” and “Everlasting Father” that we read about last week.

He is the chosen one.

He is the Savior of the world.

He was born for you and for me.

(Merry Christmas, mamas!)
