Christmas Devotional Series: Son of the Most High

Spread the love

But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the So of the Most High. -Luke 1:30-32

Can you imagine being Mary? As a mother, we know that terrifying feeling of seeing those lines on a pregnancy test or if you’re an adoptive mom, receiving that phone call to let you know that you were going to become a mom. We know the pure fear and worry that comes with the responsibility of motherhood. We fear for our children because we love them something fierce. It’s just a part of motherhood.

But now put yourself in Mary’s shoes. Unmarried, a young girl, and a virgin. You put those three things together and that would cause a reason to panic in the world she was living in. In those days, an unmarried pregnant girl was to be shamed. She was engaged to Joseph and I can imagine that she wondered if he would marry her now. She’d be an outcast in her time simply for being pregnant out of wedlock. Oh, but wait, that’s not all. “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.” She wasn’t going to be just any unmarried pregnant girl, she was going to be carrying “the Son of the Most High.”

Now, imagine the fear if you were told that.

But God chose her. She found favor with Him and He picked her to be the mother of His Son. Out of all the women He could have chosen, it was her destiny. So, what did Mary say in response to the angel Gabriel? “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” (verse 38)

Or the more popular version that we’re used to reading: Let it be.

Let it be done to me. Thy will be done. May what you said be fulfilled through me.

No outwardly panicking, just faith in the God who had chosen her. Trust in God’s plan and what He wanted to use her for. Complete obedience to His will. Mary put it all into His hands and she trusted that He would take care of her along the way as she gave birth to and raised . . .

the Son of the Most High.
